Who Is. . . ?

?         ?     Who     ?         ?

Q.  Who is Pack?

A.  George Willis Pack donated the land for the public square and for the first free public library in the area.  He provided the money that built the old Pack Memorial Library, which is now part of the Asheville Art Museum.  In order to honor this man's great contributions and to link our center to Asheville's past, the name "Pack Place" was chosen.

Q.  Who is Diana Wortham?

A.  After it was clear that the old Plaza Theater would not be renovated, they decided to build a new one in its place.  Diana Wortham was the first and one of the most generous benefactors for that project, and it was named in her honor.  Wortham is from Texas originally, but now calls Asheville home.  She saw the importance of having a theatre that would reach the entire community.

Q.  Who thought of Pack Place?

A.  Although the community had already recognized the need for revitalizing the downtown area, it is fair to say that Roger McGuire not only helped revitalize downtown, but he was also largely responsible for ensuring that Pack Place became a reality.
