A national
historic landmark that links past and present, this former Young Men's
Institute was commissioned by George Vanderbilt in 1893. The
pebbledash and brick building of Tudor design was described by the
Asheville Daily Citizen as "one of the handsomest in Asheville."
Today, the newly refurbished cultural center continues its tradition of
community service. Airy galleries in the
YMI Cultural Center feature exhibitions and programs,
classes and performances presenting African American art, culture and
