Explore the rich treasures of the Earth at the museum called "a mini Smithsonian of gems" by the Washington Post.  See the fantastic shapes and colors of minerals from around the world, be dazzled by brilliant gemstones, and discover the vast hidden treasures that lie beneath North Carolina's soil.  Test your knowledge in a state of the art Earth Science Discovery gallery where you may erupt a virtual volcano, move the continents to simulate plate tectonics, and examine volcanic ash under a microscope.  At the Colburn Earth Science Museum, discover how rocks and minerals enrich your everyday life!

Eleven galleries filled with unique hands-on exhibits offer fun and educational learning opportunities for kids ages 2 to 92.  See the amazing Mr. Bones pedal his bicycle!  Marvel at the sight of a talking transparent woman!  Enter our black light room to find out if your laundry detergent is really getting your clothes "whiter than white."  If you're under the age of six, slide into our Creative PlaySpace on the tongue of a lion into a world of discovery where young children and their parents can spend hours lost in creative play.  Learn about your body, exercise your mind, and expand your imagination at The Health Adventure!

A national historic landmark that links past and present, this former Young Men's Institute was commissioned by George Vanderbilt in 1893.  The pebbledash and brick building of Tudor design was described by the Asheville Daily Citizen as "one of the handsomest in Asheville."  Today, the newly refurbished cultural center continues its tradition of community service.  Airy galleries in the YMI Cultural Center  feature exhibitions and programs, classes and performances presenting African American art, culture and history at their best!
